GROUND FIGHTING TECHNIQUES
For Law Enforcement Officers

Video and Manual

Many fights and physical confrontations end up on the ground. Skilled fighters may take you to the ground to place you in a position of disadvantage. Unskilled fighters will usually go into a clinch which may result in both the officer and the subject falling to the ground. Once on the ground many of the traditional strikes taught at the training academy are no longer available or are not as effective. Utilizing your intermediate weapons may become difficult when on the ground. Techniques for controlling an individual on the ground are drastically different than when standing. While jiu jitsu classes teach some very effective control techniques they usually do not address certain issues relevant to law enforcement.

Ground Fighting Techniques is a 41 minute instructional video that has been designed for the police officer showing you how to survive when the fight goes to the ground. Instructor Mark McClish has 23 years of federal law enforcement experience and 30 years in the martial arts. From 1992 - 1999, he was the lead defensive tactics instructor at the U.S. Marshals Service Training Academy. In this video, he addresses some common control techniques as well as those issues unique to the field of law enforcement such as de-escalation of force, weapon retention, and placing the subject into a handcuffing position. The techniques in this video are categorized making it easy for you to follow along. Key points are displayed on the screen helping the viewer to remember important aspects of the techniques. The following areas are addressed:

- Basic principles of ground fighting
- Defenses against the takedown
- Escapes from the mounted position
- Escapes from the subject's guard
- Escapes from a headlock
- Control techniques from the officer's mount
- Control techniques from the officer's guard
- Control techniques from the subject's guard
- Weapon retention techniques

You will also receive a 20 page 8 1/2 x 11 spiral bound manual that corresponds with the video. This manual contains 60 photographs and fully explains all of the techniques. This guide makes it easy for you to reference and refresh your memory on the techniques taught in the video.

Although this video and manual are designed for the law enforcement officer, anyone can improve their ground fighting skills by practicing these techniques. These are some of the same techniques taught in a jiu jitsu classs but taken one step further. For example, instead of breaking someone's arm, this video and manual will show you how to maintain control of the subject and force him onto his stomach for handcuffing.
